My name is Derek Collins.
I'm reluctantly starting this page on the advise from a friend. I typically don't like asking for help or airing my dirty laundry and I feel that this is doing both. However, I am grateful for anyone who is in a position to help. I have tried throughout my life to help those close to me when in need and now I guess it is my turn.
My story is this:
In November 2024 I was scheduled for back surgery. During pre-op they discovered something with my heart that needed to be treated before any surgery could take place. After a visit to the cardiologist I was scheduled for a triple bypass and an Aortic Valve replacement in May of 2025. Surgery was successful and recovery was going very well until September when I was diagnosed with a cancerous melanoma (Skin Cancer) on my left lower leg. This set back my recovery from the heart surgery dramatically.
The Immunotherapy treatments for the cancer have killed off my thyroid and I'm left with virtually zero energy. Meaning I'm unable to preform my 8 hour a day standing on my feet job.
I have exhausted all state disability that was available to me and have applied for Social Security Disability. I have been told that SSD could take as much as 4-24 month for approval.
Needless to say I'm unable to stay current with any of my bills including my mortgage and HOA's which are my two largest payouts each month.
I have applied for as much financial assistance that I can think of. Some have been successful and I'm waiting to find out about other applications.
I realize that I'm no ones favorite person and that many here find my unfiltered outlook a problem. Please rest easy knowing that if you are in a position to help it is deeply appreciated and will never be forgotten. Thanks to everyone who finds it in their heart to help.
Derek
