I'm a mostly remote federal subcontractor with nearly two decades of independent contracting experience. Recently, the federal government paused payments to contractors and subcontractors to investigate "waste, fraud, and abuse." This pause, unfortunately, did not take into account the many work contractors had already completed, the supplies they'd already purchased, or other business expenses already incurred on behalf of our contracts.

Many of us have completed contractually approved projects and made purchases using our own money with the expectation that the government would reimburse us promptly, like they always have. This is no longer the case. We've been left no recourse.

These pauses on payments are devastating to small business owners and freelancers such as myself. After months of barely making it with the help of friends, I'm now flat broke! I have no more money coming in to pay my rent, buy groceries, or pay for my utilities. I am awaiting a few thousand dollars owed to me since January 2025 that would enable me to pay my rent in advance for a few months while searching for new employment opportunities. The uncertainty of payment receipt from the federal government means I can't borrow money, nor can I exist. I'm not a leech. I work for my keep. I don't know what else to do at this point, so I'm here asking for help.

I'm usually the giver, rarely the one receiving help, so asking is hard. If you could help, I'd be ever so appreciative. I can live without lights, but I need a roof over my head.

I don't have any safety nets, and I don't qualify for the few social safety net programs offered by our government. I'm all alone, a former foster kid, with no one and no place else to go, so I'm here.

I am in need of assistance paying my rent for the month of May 2025. It's 700, but I have late fees. I can't be late anymore. With the inconsistency of income, I can't borrow money, and I never know when or at this point if I'll be paid for the work I've done for the government.
