For years, my family has endured tremendous emotional, financial, and physical strain as a result of escaping and protecting ourselves from past abuse. The journey to safety came with overwhelming legal expenses—attorneys, court filings, and the constant costs associated with defending and securing our family’s well-being. Alongside the legal battle, we have carried the heavy financial burden of medical care and therapy necessary to heal from the trauma we experienced. On top of everything, I continue to pay court-ordered alimony—more than half of my take-home income—directly to the person who harmed us. Despite working as hard as I can, I’ve come to the heartbreaking realization that I simply can’t keep up with the mounting bills or rebuild stability for my family under these circumstances.
During all of this, my current, loving husband has been fighting his own medical battle. Over the last few years, he has endured 14 surgeries, countless procedures, multiple emergency room visits, and repeated hospitalizations. His health challenges came just after the loss of his job from a tech layoff, removing a vital source of income just as our expenses continued to climb.
