After over a decade in the same rental home, good friends and neighbors of mine have received devastating news: they either need to find a way to purchase the home they love, or they will be evicted.

The non-profit that owns their home is selling to a for-profit entity that is not interested in keeping them as tenants; it’s very likely the home will be renovated and flipped. Originally, my friends were told they would be given an option to buy below market rate (especially since the home needs a lot of work), but that’s no longer the case.

They really don’t want to ask for help. They have put hundreds of hours into exploring resources, only to find funding cuts and dead ends everywhere. I know it’s possible for many to give a little to help a lot, so I was one of those that suggested starting this GoFundMe.

After both losing their jobs during COVID, the parents are back in a position to qualify for a home loan, but cannot stay in their community without a substantial down payment. Rent in Portland has become inaccessible, and owning would be the only way to stave off unpredictability.

Please be part of helping this become a success story of generational change and fighting back against the for-profit companies that have taken over so much of the real estate of our cities.

My friends need at least $100k for a down payment to keep their house, ensuring the health and dignity of their loving family. In the scenario that this home purchase isn’t viable, any funds collected will go toward a down payment on another home or securing interim housing in their children's school district.
