Hi, my name is Ger Feeney and I'm from Ireland. I have known Mahmoud and Doaa Khalifa for over three years. Mahmoud and Doaa and their two boys, Yousef and Yazan, enjoyed comfortable happy lives in Rafah before the onslaught on Gaza started almost 4 years ago. They were both teachers, and their children never lacked for anything. Since then, they have lost everything they ever possessed in the world. Their home. Their livelihood. Their belongings. I am starting this fundraiser to help them pay their rent of $1000 per month, to cover the cost of food, clothes, transport because everything is as expensive in Gaza as it is in the wealthiest countries in Europe. They have suffered prolonged starvation at times. Even now, during a ceasefire, they survive on one meal a day. Sometimes they still go without food because it is too dangerous to visit the market. The occupation targets anywhere that people congregate. They have survived countless bombings by the skin of their teeth. Times when they left a street and it exploded behind them. Times when a short conversation saved them from being in a street which subsequently became a killing zone. They have fled their home on numerous occasions under the threat of tanks. Yet, they persisted in educating their children, and keeping them amused and distracted. They play the Qu'ran at night in their house so the children will sleep despite the bombings. They have been moved from home to home and tent to tent. Again, God smiled on them, and now, they are living in an apartment which costs $1000 per month. No windows. Just a roof over their heads. The weather is so hot now, they sleep on the cold floor and it kills their backs. But the heat is worse so they suffer.
