Help a Father in Tanzania Recover After a Devastating Accident

On July 30th, I was on my way home from work on a motorbike taxi — a common and normally safe mode of transportation in Tanzania. That night, two men on another motorbike came up from behind and tried to steal my backpack, which was strapped across my chest. The driver did everything he could to protect me and get away, but when they pulled me off the moving bike, both of us crashed.

I sustained multiple injuries — including a sprained ankle, knee and shoulder swelling, scrapes, bruises, and a hand injury that took months to heal. The driver's collarbone was severed which has kept him from working since the accident.

He is a devoted father of three and the sole provider for his family. Without his ability to drive, the family has been struggling to pay rent, buy food, and afford his follow-up medical care. Unfortunately, there are no social support systems or worker protection programs for motorbike drivers here.

The average driver earns around $140 per month, yet his medical expenses alone have far exceeded that. I’ve helped with what I can, but both of us were unable to work for several months following the crash, and the need has become urgent.
