Support a Black Woman Facing Housing Expulsion

Donation protected
I am a Black woman facing an unjust forced removal from my current residence. After struggling with housing insecurity and constant moves over the last two years, I settled into a new sublet this winter 2025. Initially, the individual signed onto the lease, referred to as “L”, informed me that the lease ended July 31st and I was given until the end of July to move out. Toward the end of May, L got into a familial disagreement with their cosigner resulting in threats from the cosigner to remove L’s belongings from the apartment. Because L did not tell their cosigner I was subletting, L told me I had to move out before the end of June when the cosigner would arrive to remove their items. While I sympathized with L’s situation, I informed them that none of what they told me was legally binding as I split the rent/ bills evenly and the landlord knows I am subletting a room. I told them that while I would try my best to move out as soon as possibly, going from 70 day to 40 days to find housing and move was not necessarily feasible in the middle of a housing crisis. While I have offered direct with communication, L has completely broken down these pathways. L moved all of their belongings out of the apartment without giving me an opportunity to go to storage and replace the necessities. And last week, I was informed by the landlord that L went behind my back to end the lease a month early. Additionally electricity and gas in this apartment will be cut off at the end of the month. On top of all of this, I lost my job in May and sadly I am not eligible for unemployment.

While I am attempting to move out as soon as possible (who wants to be somewhere they are not wanted?), the reality is that I am a Black woman who has already been rejected from multiple apartments, all which negatively impact one’s credit score. I may not be able to find housing in such a short period of time and I do not deserve to be left in an apartment with no utilities because of that reality. In this current journey, I have already applied to and been rejected from an apartment whose landlord asked for 6 months of rent ($5k) in order to approve my application. While I look for a room to sublet, I ask for help in raising funds for this moving journey and housing insecurity. When it rains, it pours and I am asking you all for respite before I get drenched.
