On Thursday afternoon Andrew Otis Julien of Three Fathom Harbour, Halifax N.S., tragedy struck when a fire spread quickly through the property of an 81-year-old veteran. Despite fast action by fire crews from Halifax Fire, Chezzetcook, Cole Harbour, and Musquodoboit, the flames consumed his house, garage, and sheds.

Local hero Gordie Spares was first on scene. With quick thinking, he reversed his water truck into the driveway and began dousing the fire, slowing its spread until firefighters arrived. His courageous actions gave crews precious time, but sadly, the veteran’s home and belongings were still lost.

At 81 years old, this proud veteran—who served his country with honour and dignity—now faces the heartbreaking task of starting over. With no insurance coverage, the cost of cleanup and rebuilding is far more than his family can take on alone.
