Hi, my name is Michael Lomax, and I’m a lifelong maker with a passion for teaching students how to turn ideas into real, physical objects.
I’ve been working with 3D CAD since 2005 and 3D printing since 2019. In addition to teaching locally, I also provide free online 3D printing and CAD education under the name Sandhills3D across social media platforms. That content is available to anyone who wants to learn—but working hands-on with students in person allows me to go much deeper and make a lasting impact.
Right now, I’m actively providing in-person 3D printing education at a local school, helping students learn design fundamentals, problem-solving, and real-world manufacturing concepts. We recently applied for a grant to expand this program, but unfortunately we were not selected. Rather than letting that stop us, I’m reaching out to the community for support.
Why Hands-On Learning Matters
Online education is powerful, but nothing replaces hands-on experience. When students can:
• Design their own parts
• Troubleshoot failed prints
• Understand tolerances and materials
• See their ideas become real objects
they gain confidence, technical skills, and a deeper understanding of how things are made.
These are the same tools and concepts used in engineering, manufacturing, robotics, automotive, medical, and product design careers. For many students, this program is their first exposure to modern fabrication—and it opens doors they didn’t know existed.
How Your Support Will Be Used
Funds raised through this GoFundMe will go directly toward:
• Additional 3D printers so more students can participate at the same time
• Filament and consumables for ongoing student projects
• Maintenance and replacement parts to keep equipment reliable
• Curriculum examples and project materials that allow students to go from concept to finished print
Every dollar helps remove equipment limitations and ensures students spend their time learning and creating, not waiting for access.
My Commitment
This is not a business venture—it’s an educational mission. I donate my time, experience, and expertise, and 100% of funds raised will be used to expand student access to hands-on 3D printing and CAD education.
If you believe in empowering students with real-world skills, I’d be grateful for your support. If you’re unable to donate, sharing this fundraiser helps just as much.
Thank you for helping me give more students the opportunity to design, build, and imagine what they can create.
