On March 24th, the Indian government announced a strict lockdown as a preventive measure in response to COVID-19. All facilities, including those serving basic needs, were closed. Because of that, schools were also closed. As a result, it was the students in the rural areas, especially from struggling backgrounds who suffered the most.
Many schools created WhatsApp groups and started sending solved exercises to the students without assessment or meaningful interaction with the students. I have been working in Education for some years now and I knew that ‘this’ was not education.
This was until 13 teachers came together and wanted to change this. These teachers came up with creative solutions to ensure that students are not neglected. Since then, these teachers have been teaching more than 500 students via KhanAcademy, Google Classroom, YouTube Live sessions, Zoom meetings and even phone calls.
The biggest impact is that the lessons delivered by this team, whether they are for Mathematics, Science, English, Punjabi, Hindi, Social Studies, Vocational Skills, Physical Education, or even cooking, are taught in students’ mother language and these lectures are open to the public on YouTube. In the last three months, their lectures have been viewed more than 62 thousand times by people from 10 countries
However, there is a problem: these teachers have not been paid for the last three months. School buildings are closed and no fee is taken from the parents. These awesome teachers have been working for the last three months without any compensation.
Just Imagine, how appreciated they would feel, how energized they will be, how motivated they will be, if they receive some financial support. Our team wants to target more underprivileged students, expand the curriculum, create animated teach STEM subjects with lab experiments, host guest lectures, and coach parents so that both parents and the students can participate in active education. To do that, we need your support.
We need $5,300 to compensate these incredible teachers for the last three months. A donation of $112 can sponsor a teacher for one month. A donation of $336 will sponsor three months’ salary for a teacher. So, we are counting on you to come forward and support these teachers in their cause.
