Supplies for Success

Hi everyone, my name is Maggie McIlroy and welcome to Supplies for Success!! I started Supplies for Success after joining a program on campus at Southern Methodist University called LEAD@SMU. My task was to come up with my very own community service project. I thought a lot about what I should do for my project, and considered what my strengths and passions were. I love kids and education is something I highly value, and it breaks my heart to know that some kids don't have even a pencil at home to do their homework. Supplies for Success was designed with the hope of alleviating that strain for a low-income elementary school in the Dallas area.

After a lot of research, I came across Lipscomb Elementary School. Lipscomb is home to 509 students between grades PK-5. When I found out that 91% of students at Lipscomb are considered to be at-risk, I knew I wanted to help. At-risk means that the child is less likely to transition successfully into adulthood, whether that be the ability to avoid crime, achieve academic success, or maintain financial independence. However, the thing about Lipscomb that I find so special is that even though they are financially at a disadvantage, they still are highly successful in their academics. This year, Lipscomb was nominated as a candidate school for the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme. Despite their background, students at Lipscomb come to school eager to learn, ensuring you that your donation is going somewhere where it truly will be appreciated.

The goal is simple. I plan to raise enough money to provide each student with a bag filled with the basic school supplies that they will need to sustain them throughout the second half of the school year. Each student will receive a bag stocked with notebooks, folders, pens, pencils, erasers, and other things that the students at Lipscomb need to be successful. The minimum goal is $3,500. If you would like to see the exact breakdowns, check out the cost sheet over in the Photos section. I will be purchasing the products in bulk at wholesale prices from online school supply retailers. You would be surprised just how far your dollar can stretch. Just a $5 donation can purchase 26 folders, or 71 pencils, or 10 boxes of crayons. Imagine how much a $10, $20, $50, or $100 donation can get!! Each donor will receive recognition, and no donation will go unappreciated. Since the project deadline falls right around Thanksgiving, you can consider it a holiday gift!

Once I have raised enough money and purchased the supplies, students at SMU will have the opportunity to help assemble a bag for each student while knocking out community service hours. Stay posted for more details! And finally, I plan to take the school supplies and give them directly to the students at Lipscomb in order to visualize the impact that the project has had.

It is my personal belief that a child's education is one of the best investments a person can make, because you are empowering the next generation with the tools they need to be successful. Sometimes all a child needs is the knowledge that there is someone who cares about their success. I want to make a difference in the academic careers of the children at Lipscomb, and I hope you will join me on this journey!
