Sunset's That Way

Donation protected
Sunset's That Way is...a Hollywood superstar surreal wild west dance extravaganza...exploring the identities we build for ourselves and the ways we lean into and display that identity depending on space and context. Choreographed by Alix Schillaci (me) in creative collaboration with Sarah Ellen Miller, Bran Moorhead, Garret Welker, Ashaand Simone, Emily Loar, Maria Blanco, and Maddy McCarthy. We think daydreaming and make believe can heal. We hope you'll help us find out by supporting this work- set to premiere this October 28-30 at Link's Hall.

A note from Alix:

Hi! It's You! You look so cute today! Thank you for your interest in supporting this work. This will be my first evening length work, and my first time self-producing. I chose this year to "get in the water" and invest in my dance dreams. I hope you'll put on your favorite swimsuit and get in with me. As a dancemaker (and a person generally)- I am interested in the identities we build for ourselves - in using make believe and daydreaming as tools for building exaggerated personas that offer control and opportunities for reclamation of our personal and shared experiences. My work typically includes elements of surrealism and world-building, often playing with themes from Hollywood cinema (Westerns, and cult classics), concepts of glamor/stardom, and the isolation/desperation of longing. I am trying to make high drama, dance extravaganzas that seek to keep you so entertained you don't realize you are also crying. I think this work is important because there is so much in life we can't control. The opportunity to build a world- even just for a night- where there is room for everyone's hopes and dreams, sadness and joy, stories and memories- is powerful to me. Being a person is fun and messy- see you on the dance floor.

A note on your support:

Sometimes I forget not everyone makes dance! Here is a bit about what your donation will support:

Rehearsal space rental
Performance space rental
Construction materials (costumes, props, set)(the sunset backdrop + tumbleweed puppet...)
Artist pay (performers, designers, photographer)
Program and poster printing

Getting funding for a work that does not exist yet is difficult. Our hope is by making this work- opportunities for organizational support will come. Dance performance requires investment up front. I have been saving money to make this dance for years. Any help you can offer will be endlessly appreciated, and support the artists involved in this work well after closing night. I also plan to provide a full breakdown of the costs of producing this work to any artist interested in self-producing. It's hard to know what you need until to need it.

See you at Sunset!

X + O,
A.E.S.
