Sunrise, Sunset... The Love That Split Us In Two

Hola, somos Ray (de Sudáfrica) y Jose (de Perú), una pareja que ha migrado a España con muchas ilusiones, entre ellas, recibir con amor a nuestras gemelas. Este sueño, sin embargo, dio un giro inesperado cuando nuestra vida se llenó de incertidumbre, dolor, amor incondicional... y esperanza.

Nuestra historia

Durante el embarazo, Ray comenzó a experimentar síntomas fuertes y persistentes: calambres intensos, dolor lumbar, insomnio y una barriga que crecía de forma inusual. Cuando fuimos al hospital en Alicante el 3 de marzo para un chequeo, nos dijeron que había demasiado líquido amniótico y que era un embarazo de alto riesgo, pero no nos mencionaron el síndrome de transfusión feto-fetal (Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome, TTTS) a pesar de describirles todos los síntomas.

Sin saber el verdadero diagnóstico, tomábamos cada síntoma por separado, con mucha preocupación. Gracias a un viaje previamente planeado a Hamburgo, Alemania, el 7 de abril fuimos a un centro especializado en medicina fetal... y ahí nos dieron la noticia que cambiaría todo.

Nos explicaron que Ray debía ser intervenida de urgencia: era necesario dividir la placenta con láser y drenar el exceso de líquido amniótico, o de lo contrario, ambas bebés corrían peligro inminente.

La operación se realizó esa misma noche. Fue un momento angustiante, con muchas horas de pruebas y una cirugía delicada que parecía haber salido bien. Sin embargo, al día siguiente, el corazón de nuestra pequeña "Little Sunset" dejó de latir.

El dolor fue indescriptible. Sentimos que el mundo se nos partía. Pero también recibimos un rayo de esperanza: su hermana, "Little Sunrise", seguía con vida y respondiendo bien. El médico, el Dr. Günter, nos monitoreó rigurosamente semana a semana hasta darnos luz verde para volver a casa en Alicante, donde seguimos con los controles.

Aunque aún intentamos entender por qué sucedió todo esto, creemos desde el alma que Little Sunset se sacrificó por amor, por su hermanita, cumpliendo su propósito de vida como nuestra pequeña maestra, nuestra luz, nuestro ángel.

¿Por qué necesitamos ayuda?

Toda esta emergencia médica tuvo un costo económico altísimo. Hasta el momento, hemos asumido aproximadamente 5.500 euros:

Cirugía fetal urgente: 4.500€

Estamos esperando respuesta del seguro, pero la fecha límite de pago es el 30 de julio y no sabemos si la cobertura será aprobada. Por eso, con humildad y el corazón en la mano, acudimos a ustedes: familia, amigos y comunidad.

Lo que nos enseñó Little Sunset

Nos enseñó el amor más puro. Nos enseñó que incluso en el momento más oscuro, siempre hay una razón para seguir adelante. Su hermanita Little Sunrise está creciendo fuerte y con toda la energía de su angelita al lado.

Hi, we’re Ray (from South Africa) and Jose (from Peru), a couple who recently migrated to Spain with big dreams — one of the biggest was welcoming our twin girls into the world. But life had a different plan for us… a path full of love, heartbreak, and courage.

Our Story

Throughout her pregnancy, Ray experienced intense symptoms: severe cramps every night, extreme lower back pain, loss of appetite, and a belly that looked like a basketball. On March 3rd, during a routine check-up at a hospital in Alicante, we were told there was excess amniotic fluid and that the pregnancy was high risk — but no one mentioned the Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS), even after we described all her symptoms.

We were confused, trying to figure things out on our own, unaware of the syndrome. Luckily, we had a trip planned to Hamburg, Germany, on April 5th to pick up a car from Ray’s family. On April 7th, we visited a fetal medicine center — and that’s when we finally got answers.

They told us that Ray needed immediate surgery: a laser procedure to separate the placenta and drain excess amniotic fluid, or both babies would be at risk. We were almost out of time.

She underwent emergency surgery that very night. It was one of the most stressful and painful days of our lives. I stayed with her the entire time, feeling like I was inside a nightmare, especially when the anesthesia wouldn’t take effect.

The surgery was declared a success... but the next day, April 8th, our world shattered: our baby girl, Little Sunset, had no heartbeat.

The grief was unbearable. But amidst the pain, a glimmer of hope remained — her sister, Little Sunrise, was holding on. On April 9th, with trembling hearts, we went back for another scan. Little Sunrise was stable, and the doctor began monitoring her closely every week.

Eventually, we were cleared to return to Alicante, but our hearts remained heavy with loss and love.

Why We're Asking for Help

This unexpected medical emergency came with high financial costs — nearly €5.500:

We are still waiting for the insurance decision, but we must pay everything by June 30th, whether or not it's approved.

What Little Sunset Taught Us

She taught us what unconditional love means. We believe she gave her life out of love for her sister — she fulfilled her purpose and became our little teacher, our light, our guardian angel.

We carry her memory every day as we continue to support her brave sister, Little Sunrise, who is growing strong with the strength of both their hearts.
