Sono passati quattro anni da quando ho lasciato la Cina, ma è lei a non aver mai lasciato me. La Cina è stata casa per tanti anni e, nonostante la lontananza fisica, continuo a considerarla tale.

Prima della partenza ho voluto restituire in qualche modo quello che il popolo della Terra di Mezzo mi aveva donato durante la mia permanenza. Molti di voi ricorderanno la mia esperienza di volontariato presso una scuola in un villaggio rurale nella provincia dell’Henan, frequentata da “left-behind children”: bambini che crescono lontani dai propri genitori, partiti per lavorare nelle grandi città.

In questi anni ho cercato di restare presente, anche a distanza, sostenendo la scuola come potevo, anche devolvendo il ricavato delle mie fotografie del progetto “People of China”. Oggi sento che posso fare di più. Per questo ho deciso di avviare una raccolta fondi.

I fondi raccolti saranno destinati direttamente alla scuola: serviranno per materiale didattico, ristrutturazioni, attrezzature essenziali e un ambiente di apprendimento più sicuro e accogliente. So dove andranno questi fondi, so chi li riceverà, e so quanto possano fare la differenza in un contesto così fragile.

Se sentite di voler contribuire, anche con un piccolo gesto, vi ringrazio profondamente. E se non potete donare, anche una condivisione può fare la differenza.

Non possiamo riempire tutte le assenze, ma possiamo creare opportunità.

E a volte, un’opportunità può cambiare il corso di una vita.

It has been four years since I left China, but China has never left me.

For many years it was home, and despite the physical distance, I still consider it as such. Before leaving, I wanted to give something back to the country that had given me so much during my time there. Many of you may remember my volunteer experience at a small school in a rural village in Henan province — a school attended by “left-behind children,” children who grow up far from their parents, who have moved to big cities for work.

Over the years, I have tried to remain present, even from afar, supporting the school in any way I could — including donating the proceeds from my photography project “People of China.” Today, I feel I can do more.

That’s why I’ve decided to start this fundraiser.

The funds raised will go directly to the school, supporting books and learning materials, necessary repairs, essential classroom equipment, and the creation of a safer and more welcoming environment for the children.

I know where these funds will go. I know who will receive them. And I know how much of a difference they can make in such a fragile context.

If you feel like contributing, even with a small gesture, I would be deeply grateful. And if you’re unable to donate, sharing this campaign can also make a real difference.

We cannot fill every absence, but we can create opportunities.

And sometimes, an opportunity can change the course of a life.
