On Monday 18th May Sune (my precious nephew) went for an eye test due to experiencing headaches. The optometrist was concerned with a swollen optic nerve and recommended that he go and see an eye specialist, who referred him to have a MRI. Evie, took Sune to his MRI appointment and within minutes their whole world was turned upside down. The radiographer told them that the MRI showed a growth on Sune’s brain and they needed to go straight to Wollongong Hospital to meet with a neurosurgeon. Upon arrival they were take to an isolation room and met with a neurologist who advised that they would be taken to Sydney Children’s Hospital to meet with the specialist neurologist team. Within an hour they were put in an ambulance with sirens and lights and raced up to Sydney Children's Hospital. Upon arrival they were met with a large team of doctors who were ready to take Sune into surgery. However due to Sune presenting so well they decided to complete more scans and tests to ensure they could have all the information they needed before operating. Saturday was a day filled with tests and meeting with neurological and oncology team. Today, Sunday 24th May, Sune went into surgery at 8:30am for a 14 hour surgery to remove the tumour from his brain. What the future looks like for Sune is very uncertain at this stage. But we do know it will be a 3 month recovery of rehabilitation and recovery. Evie works casual and therefore taking time off from work to be by her Sune Sunshine’s side means she has no financial income to pay bills, rent etc. Any donations will relieve the financial pressure and worry and enable her to focus on caring for and being there for Sune.
