Sunderland Students: Sensory Garden Rejuvenation

Donation protected
Help us turn our Courtyard into a bright, vibrant and stimulating Sensory garden for our Sensory learners.

Our Sensory learners are raising money to transform our Courtyard & picnic area into a sensory haven. The sensory garden will be well equipped to meet our learners sensory needs with a musical wall, vibrant flower beds, with edible plants and a scented rockery, as well as a sensory pathway and transformed picnic area with wheelchair accessible picnic benches. A second wave of redevelopment may include a nature area with log seating and an enterprise zone where students can have wheelchair accessible planters that allow them to grow and nurture new plants and keep the garden self sustaining for years to come.

Fundraising is being led by our Sensory learning students who access our specialist provision for students with profound and Multiple learning difficulties. Our learners would normally raise money through fundraising events such as bake sales, bag packs, Makaton choir performances and Craft fairs. This allows them to integrate with the Collège and wider community.

However due to Covid-19 pandemic these events have been put on hold. However this has not put the students off their fundraising activities. The students where generously given a community chest grant from Sunderland Councils Barnes ward to buy a outdoor xylophone and a sensory archway.
The students have worked hard  in the Christmas term to raise money through smaller fundraising activities towards buying new plants for the planters.

The courtyard :

The courtyard sits in the Centre of the headways building at our Bede campus. It is regularly accessed by students from our Directions & Sensory learning department (The College SEND provision) and is accessible to 100s of on campus students, lecturers and Staff.

What we'll deliver:

Phase One -
Create a paved (or decked) eating area and convert our existing picnic benches to wheelchair accessible picnic benches.
A outdoor music wall
A multi-textured sensory walkway and a pagoda with coloured acrylic walls.
New flowers and edible plants for our existing planters.
Water feature.

Phase 2 (in the future)

Ideas currently include:
A natural woodland seating area and enterprise zone with wheelchair accessible planters and greenhouse.
New wheelchair accessible picnic benches.
A memorial garden/quiet area

Why it's a great idea:

Transforming this land will give all of our students a good sense of pride, and demonstrate that students can overcome barriers and contribute and accomplish anything with the right help and support. It will provide a beautiful & inclusive outdoor space where students can integrate post Pandemic.

Thank You for taking the time to read our Page and a massive thank You too all those who pledge to help us.
