My name is Sebastian, I’m 38 years old and for as long as I can remember I have enjoyed going with my family and friends, camping, mountain biking, rock and mountain climbing, this is how my passion became my profession. For over 15 years I have been a professional mountain guide, but 4 years ago, my life changed forever.
I suffered a spinal cord injury (C5-C6), which left me paralyzed from my chest downwards. Luckily, my arms where not totally affected. The recovery process was very slow, hard and frustrating, as one can imagine. Even though I have recovered a lot, I can’t move or feel my legs. Every day it is a challenge, but I continue to work on having, a quality of life and independence.
I missed tremendously my mountains; I was desperate to feel free in nature again. I looked for some type of adapted sport that I could do, but in my country Ecuador, we did not have much options. Finally in Spain, during a specialized therapy at the Guttmann Institute, I was introduced to “handcycling”, once I tried it, I felt alive again.
This was the beginning of my adventure!
I started a foundation call “ONE MORE SUMMIT” to promote adventure adaptive sports for individuals with especial needs, I also partnered with a friend to manufacture this hand bikes in my country, becoming the first ones being made in South America. All of this because I’m convinced that nature heals you, makes you stronger and when in contact with the outdoors, one becomes our best self.
I finally got back to the mountains, and now I have a new challenge. I’m training hard to become the first person on a hand bike, which with out assistance will climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. I want to demonstrate that limitations exist only on our mind, and I will dedicate my life purpose to challenge all of us, with physical or mental disabilities, and confirm that one has the power to change adversities into strengths, and enjoy life to the fullest.
With your help, we can raise awareness and prove to others that an accessible world it is possible, if we all work collectively in making our societies more inclusive. We must understand that life is a continuous challenge, and we must become resilient to it, only together we can climb any summit we put our mind in to.
We will use the funding raised for the expedition to Africa and to document this project. We need the funds before Semptember 2019, and your support is fundamental to make this possible.
Thank you in advance for believing in this project, and for giving us the support needed to get to the top of Kilimanjaro on a Handbike!
