Summer is our beautiful baby girl. She loves bananas, mommy's hugs & daddy's singing, and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star as her favorite lullaby.
On May 5th, doctors discovered a growth at the base of Summer's brain. The growth turned out to be a tumor caused by a cancer gene called atypical teratoid rhabdoid tumor, otherwise known as AT/RT. A very rare and deadly cancer that attacks infants & toddlers by causing aggressive rhabdoid tumors to grow in 1/3 places; the spine, brain, and/or kidneys. Not much is known about AT/RT because it was just classified by the World Health Organization just under 20yrs ago.
After several operations, the initial tumor was finally removed. Yet because of the cancer gene, Summer still has to undergo chemotherapy followed by radiation therapy; all in the hopes of eliminating the still existing cancer cells so that she may live a long and healthy life. The treatments themselves will last approximately 11months, but the future is still unwritten. Which means it may be longer.
Since we are an active duty family overall medical costs have been somewhat minimal, but we only have one vehicle and we're stationed on the west coast, far away from all of our family and friends. We're asking for help to cover travel costs for us to and from treatments, and immediate family members that are able to fly in to help with the recovery periods. As well as any unforeseen expenses that are sure to arise as a result of this rare disease that targets our children.
