On February 16, 2021, following a routine baseline mammogram, our sister, Summer Woodward, was diagnosed with a type of breast cancer called Triple-Positive Invasive Ductal Carcinoma.
This devastating news has flipped her entire world upside down. She is now facing a long, painful, and exhausting road ahead. Her current plan of treatment is 12 consecutive weeks of aggressive chemo followed by several surgeries at MD Anderson in Texas. She will then spend the next year receiving Herceptin infusions every three weeks.
For those of you who know Summer, you know she is a dedicated, homeschooling momma to three beautiful children (ages 7, 6, and 2). Her husband, Vince, is a lineman and their only current source of income.
Navigating treatment during COVID-19 as an immunosuppressed cancer patient will create extraordinary challenges (including facing all chemo treatments and surgeries alone). In order to limit exposure to the virus, there will be very few people who will be able to physically help Summer with childcare, household chores, etc. Her husband will have to miss work often and all of his FMLA leave will be completely unpaid.
Friends and family have been asking how to help, and as hard as it can be to ask for help, this is what she needs. Right now, financial support would mean so much to Summer and her family. Her many trips to MD Anderson (flight, lodging, food) will cost thousands of dollars. They will also be facing mountains of medical bills on top of having to lose a great deal of income due to her husband’s unpaid leave from work.
Summer’s positive energy and uplifting spirit have been a blessing to the community around her for many years, and now she needs our help. This page was created to help alleviate some of the stress that comes along with such an unexpected and difficult diagnosis. We all want Summer’s focus to be on getting better, not on all of the financial worries this diagnosis has brought with it. Summer has always sought to alleviate the stress of others, and now it’s her turn to receive that blessing.
There is no donation too small, and if you are unable to donate, please share her story.
The outpouring of love and support for our sister during this time has deeply touched our hearts, and we are so grateful. Just know that any help you provide will help Summer to be better focused on the most important goal of all: kicking cancer to the curb.
We love you. We thank you. And above all, we are humbled by your support.
