When you were growing up and summer vacation began, did you wonder what you would do for three months? Did you wonder if you would eat one, two or three meals? Did you wonder if you would be let out of the house? Did you wonder who would take care of you when your parents went to work? Summers aren't always fun for our students. Many of them want to stay in school. At Philadelphia Montessori Charter School (PMCS) in Southwest Philadelphia, students can stay in school!
For ten years, we have had a summer program for some of our most disadvantaged youths. We offer academic programs in reading and math in the morning, followed by enrichment classes in robotics & coding, yoga & tai chi, culinary, gardening, drama, sewing, and arts & crafts in the afternoon.
And what is a summer without some travel? We take our campers "around the USA" with a virtual tour of five regions of the USA in five weeks. We introduce them to the histories, traditions, and cultures of parts of the USA that they may not have an opportunity to visit.
We provide free breakfast, lunch, and homemade snacks daily. 48 meals are served to each of our campers! This eliminates some of the hardship our families encounter due to the end of the free breakfasts/lunches provided during the school year.
Our program is a non-profit. We charge the minimal amount, but this summer, in particular, our families are struggling to come up with the money. We offer financial assistance, but there are too many who are in need this year.

For $8 an hour or $150 a week, you can change the summer for a child.
