Welcome to Summer Lynn’s page!

Audra and Lee found out they were expecting on October 10th, 2021. Jack and Violet were so excited to welcome another sibling to the family!

Audra experienced preeclampsia with their first daughter, Violet, who was born prematurely at 34 weeks so she worked very diligently with the doctors to prevent preeclampsia from developing with this pregnancy.  Unfortunately once you’ve had it with prior pregnancies, it is likely to reoccur with subsequent pregnancies.

On February 23, Audra started developing preeclampsia at only 24 weeks. She went to Mercy Hospital and was transferred to Abbott Hospital Mother Baby Center, which is connected to Children’s Hospital and known for their excellent level 4 NICU center.

As the next ten days in antepartum progressed, Audra’s blood pressure and the fluid around her heart increased. To avoid further duress on mom and baby, doctors decided they would need to deliver immediately. Summer Lynn was born on March 5, 2022 at 3:18am via emergency c-section at 25 weeks. She was 1 lb. 8 oz. and 12 in. long.

Summer was immediately intubated on emergency oxygen through a ventilator and began infusions of several medicines to help stabilize her vital stats and strengthen her lungs.

She is a little fighter, and has overcome many challenges, including multiple blood transfusions, changing of multiple ventilators, two bouts with pneumonia, testing for brain bleeds, intense retinopathy (retinal) exams, and the monitoring of the closing of a hole in her heart (called a PDA), all on her own with only medication and no surgical intervention!

Due to her diagnosis of Chronic Lung Disease (CLD), Summer continues to require significant oxygen assistance to maintain stable oxygen saturation levels. CLD is a serious complication of prematurity resulting from poor lung growth and lung injury.

Summer recently advanced to a nasal cannula with back up ventilation support. She has exceeded expectations working to breathe on her own but she still requires oxygen help in moments where she tires out. She has also been weaning off of morphine, dexamethasone, a (steroid for lung growth), diuril, and lasix (diuretics to expel fluid).

Summer loves to make shapes with her mouth as she is getting used to reduced dependency of her breathing tube! She also loves to snuggle with her mom and dad and loves to spend time in her Momaroo swing.

At this point, it looks like Summer could come home by the fall but likely will need continued oxygen support. A fundraiser is in the works to help raise money for medical bills and preparing the home for Summer’s arrival and her health needs. We will share more on the fundraiser as details become available.
