to FaithWorks Compton’s: Algorithm & Flow coding program.

Since 2013, LA2050 has supported 125 ideas moving LA toward a brighter future. In 2020, the FaithWorks Compton nonprofit organization received a $75k LA2050 grant, during the pandemic, to fund the Algorithm & Flow: Code Immersion Program. The Algorithm & Flow coding program bought Chromebooks and mobile data plans for 60 students (ages 7-17) and administered free MIT Scratch and 3D game development classes over Zoom.

Our children are headed to a world dominated by machine learning A.I., augmented reality, self-driving cars, consumer space travel, quantum computing, cryptocurrency and the like. Your donations to Faithworks Compton’s: Algorithm & Flow coding program enables underrepresented students to access fundamental coding lectures and labs. This fundraising campaign will support our summer program.

For whatever reason, STEM education providers like Digital Dragon, Code Ninjas and Rolling Robots aren’t motivated to teach the children from neighborhoods like Compton, CA (in South Los Angeles). This is our focus. Families should not be forced to trek to the San Fernando Valley and battle hours of LA traffic to find an age-appropriate Computer Science class for their child. Nor should they need to pay $40, $50, or $60 an hour for the service! Our classes are free for our parents.

Faithworks Compton just completed an after-school coding program for the Compton Sheriff’s Youth Activities League. It was a lean & fiscally responsible coding program. The operating cost is essentially the salaries of the instructors plus the overhead of payroll service. Thirty students were exposed to the Java modern programming language and digital circuits.

You carry power in your pockets. Money funds the life of learning. Turning kids into coders can happen. Clap and celebrate capable kids of color defying stereotypes and doing the difficult. It isn’t easy to speak to machines with symbols or wire digital chips with resistors, diodes and displays, but it is possible. It is possible to do with your support.
