Fifty to sixty children in Les Cayes, Haiti, ages 6 to 14, have a rare opportunity this summer: to learn and grow in a safe, spiritual environment for eight weeks. Life in Haiti these days is bleak and difficult. Many families live in one or two room homes with no electricity, plumbing, or running water. The ongoing gang situation and general insecurity in Port au Prince has driven up prices everywhere, making it even harder for families to provide for their children. Most of these kids attend primary school from September through June, but during July and August, they have few opportunities for meaningful activities or even a daily meal.

This summer, my friend Wilnord Pierre, director of a PEACE Project supported school, wants to organize a Bible school to help these children. All money raised will go directly to buying craft supplies, tables, chairs, and food for a meal each day. No one is getting paid—the teachers are volunteers who care deeply about the well-being of these kids. Lesson plans from the Christadelphian Sunday School Union will be used as a basis for the classes and activities, giving the children a positive experience in an otherwise negative environment.

The effects of this bit of sunshine in an otherwise dark place can last a lifetime. Families in Haiti are often stretched financially, which leads to cutting back on food and seriously affects the growth and development of children. The value of the meal provided as part of the daily Bible school cannot be underestimated.
