My Mother's Battle with Cancer
It is with a saddened heart that I am sending this today. As you probably already know, my dear mother Sue was diagnosed with Stage 3 lung cancer in the middle of 2014 and went through surgery to remove the tumor, followed then by typical treatments of Chemo and Radiation. Everything was going pretty well and she finished her last Radiation treatment in December of 2014, followed closely by her last Chemo in January of 2015. Things continued to move along, returning to somewhat normal and she was declared in remission and "cancer free" in February 2016.
However, a few months after that her cancer markers started to rise and continued to rise month over month until the Oncologist decided that another round of Chemo was necessary and she resumed treatment in August. She completed that round of treatment in October, but it had taken a serious toll on her physical health and her staging had increased to Stage 4. By the end of October, she was having a much harder time managing and you could tell she was struggling physically. She was still in good spirits and still working and managing her day to day activities. She then started suffering from headaches and her Oncologist ordered an MRI.
Starting at the beginning of November she started showing signs of concern, she was suffering from some memory issues which started off small and then continued to grow. We originally thought it may be associated with Chemo brain. Around the middle of the month, she started suffering from confusion, additional memory issues and was no longer able to use her cell phone. On November 23rd we went to her oncologist appointment and he confirmed that cancer had spread to her brain and that her symptoms were a direct result of one of the tumors. The tumors were causing her brain to swell which resulted in everything we were seeing. Her cognitive health continued to decline day over day where she was no longer able to feed herself. It leveled off, but then started in on her physical.
She started at home Hospice care Friday (12/02/16) and they helped get her comfortable. Unfortunately, her health continued to decline and Sunday morning (12/04/16) she took her last breath in my Father's arms.
She was comfortable, but she fought the illness until her very last moment.
