On December 24th, my wonderful friend Sue Madecky’s 34 year old son Justin was diagnosed with stage 4 colorectal cancer that has spread to both lungs.
The news of such an advanced cancer in such a young person was a shock. An aggressive treatment plan was quickly formulated that includes bi-weekly chemotherapy treatments that will continue for another two months followed by daily radiation and more chemo. Surgery to remove the primary tumor and the surrounding lymph nodes comes next. If successful, they will focus on strategies to remove as much of the cancer in his lungs as they can. This process will take the better part of a year.
The chemotherapy has made Justin very ill and because of the side effects (vomiting, pain, and neuropathy in his hands and feet) Justin has been unable to work since starting treatment and his employer let him go in January.
Medical bills, prescriptions, and other bills have started to pile up due to Justin’s inability to work and Sue is working extra hours to help him meet these expenses. They have recently started discussing some of the things he would really like to do and experience in his life and they are going to try to make those things happen.
Sue is the most kind and selfless person I know. She works full-time as a nurse and also created a nonprofit organization as well as recovery housing that has helped many women, their children, and their families. She makes a tremendous difference in so many lives with her huge heart and dedication to others. Never asking for anything herself, this is a chance to help both her and Justin during this unbelievably difficult time.
Please consider donating towards Justin’s treatment so he can focus on his healing and not his debt. This would also provide them with time to make more memories.
No donation is too small and would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to read their story and please share to pass this along.
