Some of you may remember Subway Dunford (Subby Dee) who was rescued from the tracks of the NYC 6 train as a one year old cat in 2016. I fostered him at the time for Magnificat in New York City until he was adopted by the person who discovered him.
Now Subby needs our help again. Ian and Angela, Subby's people, have had a rough few months. Their 18 year old cat, Myrtle, passed in February and their cat Watson has developed what is either IBD or lymphoma - he will very soon need testing and a biopsy to narrow down his diagnosis further.
And then Subby suddenly went blind.
Ian and Angela rushed him to the vet and the testing began. Finally, Subby was diagnosed with FIP (feline infectious peritonitis) a cat-specific coronavirus that is almost always deadly if left untreated.
There is no medication for FIP available to vets in the United States, on or off label. There are, however, medications that can treat FIP with tremendous success rates that have to be imported from out of the country at significant difficulty and expense - which is what they did.
Within days, Subby could see again and his appetite is returning to normal. He will need medication for several weeks.
When we rescued Subby as barely more than a kitten I thought he was set for a long and happy life with his new best friend, Watson, and now they're both in tremendous trouble.
Subway's treatment will cost approximately $5000 in medication plus $2000 in veterinary and diagnostic fees - FIP is not easy to diagnose and there is no definitive test. With Myrtle's illness and passing and Watson's medical needs, Angela and Ian are looking at significantly more than $10,000 in vet expenses in just a few months.
I am trying to raise $5000 to help them out. They took Subby in when he was in need, made him part of their family, and have taken the best loving care of him. If you can, please help Subby and his family.
