Stacey’s Road to Recovery
Donation protected
Stacey is the cornerstone of her family. She is a loving wife, caring mother of 3 beautiful children: Sara (12) Austin (10), and Ryley (5), an amazing daughter, and the absolute best big sister and friend anyone could ask for. It must be true when people say that bad things happen to the best people, because on May 4, 2018, at the age of only 32 years old, Stacey endured something that is almost unheard of for someone her age.
After trying to wake her husband up from snoozing his alarm for the 5th time, Stacey went to help the kids get ready for school, only to be stopped dead in her tracks by not one, but two major strokes. We are so thankful to my brother-in-law, Jason, for hitting snooze that day, calling the ambulance, and being with my sister for this terrifying ordeal (she hasn’t had a minute to herself between family and visitors).
When she arrived in emergency, Stacey was rushed into surgery where doctors worked to remove the blood clots in her brain that had caused her strokes. They found that this incredibly strong woman had actually suffered multiple mini-strokes leading up to this point, and that she also has a hole in her heart – shocking for someone who loves her husband and children so wholeheartedly. The larger of the two strokes has caused damage to the left side of Stacey’s brain, affecting the dominant right side of her body as well as her speech.
Although Stacey has a strong support system, and we will do anything to help her and her family, we are reaching out for help. The road to recovery will be difficult with speech therapy and physical therapy on the way, only Jason’s benefits cover a modest portion of this. The doctors say that it will be quite some time before Stacey is able to return to work, and Jason has taken time off to be with his wife and children during this life altering event. Times will be tough while Stacey and Jason are living off reduced income, incurring new medical expenses, and maintaining some semblance of routine for the kids.
Life at home will also be limited as Stacey re-learns how to use her right side once more. She is already worrying about not being able to drive the kids to school, go to the grocery store, or clean the house – talk about a mom, worrying about chores. These are thoughts and stressors that shouldn’t plague such a young family. The kids are very hopeful that Mommy will be back home in time for Mother’s Day and Sara’s 13th birthday on the same day.
I am in absolute awe with this woman and her ability to stay positive throughout all of this. She always has a smile on her face and makes everyone laugh, including her nurses. Stacey hates being the center of attention, and she is not one to ask for help, but I am asking on behalf of her and her family. Please help my big sister and best friend on her journey back to normal.
