Hello All! I'm Matt Sands mom. I have thought long and hard about doing this, but I think the time has come to ask for some help. Matt has been there for so many people for a very long time and now needs some help too. Matt starting dispatching for the Brevard County Sheriff's department while he was is high school. He later became an EMT, Paramedic and a Flight Medic. Matt has always helped people.
Ten years ago, Matt lost his right kidney to cancer. He worked after his cancer as a medic, but he decided he needed a break and moved back to FL and became a dispatcher for Brevard County Fire Rescue. At that time he just wasn't feeling the best but nothing was showing up or was conclusive. He decided to find something less stressful so he moved to GA. Matt got involved in the funeral business. He plans to become a funeral director when his health allows. Matt still wants to help people and does an amazing job at consoling and advising people in grief.
Matt not only is working at the funeral home, he is working a second job at a local motel as a front desk clerk. Matt isn't lazy, he just isn't well right now.
About a year ago Matt was to have surgery for a possible cancer on his foot. He was taken into the operating room and before I knew it he was standing beside me. The anesthesiologist would not put him to sleep because his blood pressure was out of control. We were told that he might have a rare adrenal gland tumor.
After many tests and much time and money it has been determined that he has a pheochromocytoma, possibly 2 of them. One on each adrenal gland. Matt has had no insurance during this time so everything has been out of pocket. He finally does have some insurance now. Thank Heaven, but he is still struggling. He has been out of work this week with a blood pressure of 232/120. That was a reading at the doctor's office. He continues to try to work as much as he can but it is becoming more difficult. He is taking 8, yes 8, medications for his blood pressure. The cardiologist just gave him 2 new ones yesterday. They are now worried about his heart and his only good kidney so he is going for more tests in the next couple of weeks.
I realize that there are many people who are in need of some help, but Matt could really benefit from a helping hand now. Stress is a killer and with his blood pressure as high as it is any relief of that stress would be a blessing. May I please thank you for any help you can give. It doesn't matter how old your kids get, they are always your kids. Matt, no matter how bad he feels always has a smile and rarely ever complains. He's a good guy who just needs to feel better!
