Studying Volcanoes

I teach at a school in one of the most challenging neighborhoods (both economically and socially) in Chicago. One would assume that learning is not a priority. This is not the case. It can be trying, but most scholars and their families value education and recognize it as a key to success. It is one of the reasons I drive over an hour every day to teach. My classroom has thirty-one young people who are inquisitive, supportive of each other and want to learn. I enjoy encouraging their natural curiosity and watching their progress throughout the year. Because of this, I am always seeking opportunities to challenge and better myself as an educator.
My focus now is to improve how I teach STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics). I want my scholars to understand that not only is learning about the various aspects of science fun, but it can also provide career opportunities that will benefit themselves and their community. I have been given the opportunity to attend a professional development session at the Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park in June 2023. I am excited because it mixes with my love of the outdoors, as well as being able to learn a new skill. I can't wait to learn from real-world observations (i.e., volcanoes and their impact on ecosystems) and apply this knowledge when teaching in a classroom. However, I am in need of assistance with cost of the program, transportation, and lodging as this is not covered.
Having grown up in KY, I have an appreciation and love for the outdoors. I spent my childhood visiting state parks with my parents, as well as attending conservation, 4-H, and Girl Scout camps. Often, I was one of the few, if not only, African American children present. I believe my previous experiences have helped me to develop into the teacher that I am today. I understand that representation matters and often share my experiences with my nieces, nephew, and scholars. The goal is that one day they also will want to explore and learn beyond what is familiar. For these reasons, I can't wait until I can share what I learn while visiting volcanoes.
