Studying Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You

Donation protected
Our school's mission and vision is: “a community of learners who recognize the history of our institution and the power of its vision and voice to encourage critical thinking and compassion as a means of creating future leaders. We are committed to growing diverse leaders who understand how to work together to create positive change in our school and in our communities.” We believe an important way for us to help start our 9th graders on this path is to read "Stamped: Racism, Antiracism and You" by Jason Reynolds and Ibram X. Kendi. This book offers wonderful tools for students to learn how to create positive change. It gives students a base understanding of the history of racism so they can become creative agents of change.

To help us fulfill our mission in a remote context we want to provide every student with a hard copy of the book to keep. By having their own copy, students can practice a broad range of literacy skills and increase opportunities for working together and building critical listening and compassion.  We already raised money for some of the books and this project will help us raise enough to ensure that each student has their own copy. We have arranged to purchase the books through a local independent bookstore to support local business during the pandemic. However, to keep the great deal we've arranged with the bookstore and to have the copies in hand to begin the year, we hope to fund this project within a week.

More about the project:
Teachers across departments have committed to creating units and lessons based on this text. By working with a common text across content areas we can support community and deep learning during this time when many students are feeling disconnected or isolated from their school community. We want to show students that anti-racism work and Black Lives Matter education apply in all subjects and are not just limited to Social Studies or Language Arts.

More about our students and classes:
We love the inclusive honors for all approach to our 9th grade classes. Students come from all over our city with a broad range of backgrounds, perspectives and experiences. 9th grade is such an exciting transitional time to help students come together from different schools and backgrounds and learn together and begin their high school experience. They are transitioning into ideas of independence and learning to think critically. They are learning how to adjust to high school.

Our honors for all program is designed to help each student celebrate their strengths and learn from each other. Our goal is to foster a strong sense of inclusive community. We want students to have the academic skills and content knowledge they need for high school and college but also the interpersonal problem solving and collaboration skills and imagination to engage in and create a holistically healthy and just society.

We love our students’ openness to possibility, their joy, their experience but also their flexibility around new ideas and new relationships. This is a powerful time to meet new people and learn new ways to engage in and build community while sharing gifts and strengths.

Please help us create this unifying and important project to being our remote learning in an powerful way.
