Study Healthcare Abroad in Gaborone, Botswana!

Hi! My name is Aaliyah, and I am currently an undergraduate student at the University of Pennsylvania studying Neuroscience on a Pre-med track with the ultimate goal of becoming a Neurosurgeon! One of my biggest dreams coming into college was getting the opportunity to study abroad. I am currently a Junior, and between Covid and academic requirements, I haven't been given a chance to do so. However, I have just been made aware of an opportunity to spend two months in Botswana this summer, home of one of Africa's most vital healthcare systems. I could do this through the CIEE Summer Community Public Health Program in Gaborone. The curriculum I have been introduced to so far has neglected the importance of the public/community health aspect of medicine and health care for people who look like me. I believe that understanding the social implications of health and paying attention to communities' mental health is just as important as treatment in hospital settings. To me, an essential part of stepping into a healthcare role is being able to treat everyone, and I can’t do that if I don’t know about their lives and that of others in the community. I strive to be an amazing surgeon, and this program is just one step that can help me get there, but it is costly and not one I can afford alone. I am grateful for anything anyone can give to support my journey!
