Hello family and friends!
2017-2018 has been a blessed time in my writing career. I published a important essay in the wonderful Uncommon Bonds book (Peter Lang) and was awarded a 2017 summer scholarship to The Fine Arts Center in Provincetown to study under Angela Flournoy. I was further blessed this Sunday evening to find I was admitted into Tin House Summer Workshop as a participant in Tayari Jones fiction writing workshop.
Tin House workshop is extremely competitive. With a current acceptance rate of less than 15% I am deeply humbled the admissions panel selected my work. Tayari Jones is the New York Times Bestselling author of Oprah's latest book club selection, An American Marriage. Tayari's work focuses on mass incarceration and the ways in which it can change relationships. The novel I'm writing is about a woman's reentry into society after serving a three year jail sentence. The novel is told from the woman's perspective, her angry teenage daughter and the woman's dying mother.
I believe the stories of incarcerated persons deeply matter. These stories are important and need to get into the world. The playwright August Wilson wrote the stories of the average man and encapuslated them in history. He saw the God in all people. My goal is very much the same.
Unfortunately, the scholarship that I hoped to be awarded wasn't granted. I'm a woman with multiple expenses (as we all are). I'm also one who doesn't like to ask for help, but I feel compelled to attend this workshop. I know working with Tayari Jones will enhance my work and provide me the tools to finish my novel and spread love.
The cost of tuition is $1,200 and the room/board cost is $600.
Please come alongside me in support of my career. Anything you can contribute will help. If you cannot come alongside of me in this way, please consider coming alongside of me with your prayers. I appreciate you all and your taking the time from your busy day to read this note.
