Study Abroad in Munich | Maymester 2019

Hello everyone!
My name is Anaya Gibson! I am a journalism major and Spanish minor at the amazing University of Georgia (Go Dawgs!). On May 14, I will be embarking on a trip to Munich, Germany for about 3 weeks to study Travel Journalism with UGA's Grady Journalism Program. I feel incredibly blessed to have the opportunity to do this, because I have always wanted to travel and write, from when I was a little girl, so this is truly a dream come true!
A little bit about me!
Currently, I am involved in InfUSion Magazine, UGA's diversity magazine, as an Opinion Writer. I am also the newly elected Social Media Committee Chair for UGA's Circle K Chapter (which I am ECSTATIC for).
I have been on the Dean's List every semester since I have started at UGA in August 2016. For my merit, I was the recipient for the Robert Woodruff, Jr. Scholarship, which is awarded to one journalism student based on academic achievement, in May 2018.
My professional goals:
My goal is to pursue the travel journalism track with an emphasis in multimedia journalism. So, this includes: print, digital, radio, broadcast, etc. The exposure through traveling has made who I am today. Growing up in a cross-cultural household with a Bahamian father and American mother, as well as having the opportunity to visit the Bahamas for the summer to visit family and live amongst the locals has not only shown me the similarities and differences in cultures, but also, developed a passion for discovering ways that unite us together. I believe culture is what shapes the fibers of a person, so traveling and storytelling about how and why that happens is a vision that I see myself doing, quite honestly, for forever. Therefore, this trip is an opportunity that I could not pass up!
However?
This trip is quite expensive, especially with consideration of the program fee, daily meals, travel expenses, UGA fees, etc. My parents work very hard in making sure that my tuition is paid in full every year, along with other debts and expenses. Therefore, I want to give back and help them in the best way that I can, so that this trip would not be a huge burden on their finances. ANY and ALL donations count!
Costs
Currently, I have about $1700 in scholarships from the HOPE scholarship and Grady College, that will go towards both University fees and Tuition. I am also waiting to hear back from other scholarship entities! I also plan to pick up a part-time job, as well as a 2k a day Run-A-Thon to help with airfare expenses and daily expenses (food, travel, etc.).
Why $4,818?
The goal of will fund the following:
- University Fees ($548)
- Program Fees ($2,770)
- Airfare (~$1,300)
- Tuition ($200)
TOTAL (Scholarships included): $4,818
Deadline?
All charges have to be paid in full by May 1, or I will not be able to leave the country! :(
All that being said...
I am very excited about where this journey will take me. It may take a while, but anything is possible with a little faith and hard work. If we all pitch in, I know that we can reach this goal in no time! :)
Thank you so much!
