Rick Dickinson Student Support Fund

11.8.55 – 24.4.18

We have been utterly overwhelmed by the amount of people asking where to send flowers, or how to donate in our dad's memory, and while we're so touched by such gestures of kindness, we would prefer instead that anyone who so wishes to, considers instead donating to a student support fund in memory of Rick, which can be used to help and encourage young designers in their careers.
On 24th April 2018, we didn’t just lose a father, but the world lost a great design legend, and we have been so overwhelmed by the public response to the passing of our dad, Rick Dickinson. Many colleagues, friends, and those who may never have met him – but were perhaps influenced or inspired in some way by his design work – have reached out to share memories. While the reality of our loss is still incredibly raw, and somewhat incomprehensible, we’d like to invite anyone who may have known Rick to share any memories, pictures, or condolences on a page on his website – however small, or however detailed they may be: www.theproductdesigners.com/rickcondolences

As a student of Newcastle Polytechnic (now Northumbria University), our dad took the reins from John Pemberton in the late 70s as the in-house industrial designer of Sinclair Research Ltd, having joined the company before he was yet to finish his degree. Dad’s creative flair, and drive to always question the norm, lead to the unique, and now iconic style of the ZX80 and ZX81. In the late 80s and early 90s, I recall my own personal memories of playing with the many discarded samples of rubber with my sister – which of course would become the foundations to the 'Speccy' keyboard, and the memories to come for so many others in the computing, and gaming community.

My dad owes so much to his education, and the opportunities that his industrial design course afforded him, always speaking so fondly of his experiences in Newcastle, so it seems only right to honour his achievements as a designer with a memorial prize/scholarship in his name. With the support of faculty, and Head of Industrial Design, we are just working out the finer details to the award which should map directly onto those student skills and attributes which most clearly reflect Dad's own philosophy and practice – in essence, those aspects of design which were close to his heart. To borrow the words of John Elliott, former Head of Industrial Design, “Rick’s passion and ability to meld innovation and technology together with exquisite and sensitive visual detailing should be high on the agenda.”

My sister Grace and I, his wife Lizzy, mother Ursula, and our family, would like to thank every single one of you who has reached out or shared a thought/tweet/email/message.
