Students Support Students Initiative

What is the Students Support Students initiative?

This initiative was created by the East Stroudsburg University (ESU) Student Government, after receiving numerous reports of students not able to return to the University and being forced to remove themselves from campus, they are forced to pause their education indefinitely. This unfortunate circumstance is solely due to unpaid bills. The purpose of this initiative is to fundraise money that would be applied to student bills directly in hopes of retaining students. More importantly, to support students to achieve their goal of graduating as a Warrior. Students on our campus come from every economic background and many are first-generation students. Socioeconomic status should never be a barrier for restricting educational opportunity.

Why Students Support Student's initiative?

The reason this initiative is created to offer immediate financial support to students who have limited access to loan approval and who do not qualify for the ESU Hardship Grant. To prevent students from experiencing this financial hardship in the future, the student government is also starting a student leader scholarship to help support student of need on campus.

When is the deadline to donate?

The deadline to donate funds will be Monday, January 27, 2020, by 4:00 PM. The reason for this is that the funds must be applied to the students’ university bill by January 28, 2020. The amount that is raised at this time will be used in its entirety to help as many applicants as possible so that they are able to resume their education quickly. If all students are helped and there is a remaining balance of donated money, all of it will be donated to the SGA Scholarship for student leaders on campus.

Who is choosing the recipients of the donated money and what is the criteria?

While this scholarship is not directly hosted by the Student Government Association of East Stroudsburg University, the executive council for this organization will be selecting the recipients of any donated money. The council will be blinded of the applicants’ personal information so that no biases will affect the awards. The council will be meeting after the deadline to donate, so applicants that are awarded any funds will be contacted on the night of January 27. Awards will be applied to awarded applicants on January 28, in time for the deadline for registration at ESU.
