Support students fined for protesting on campus

Today, the 28th of August NSW riot police broke up a rally on Sydney uni campus, fining 10 protesters for Covid breaches.  

Students and staff were protesting cuts to courses, staff redundancies and fee increases.  While up to 30 people can sit inside for classes, no more than 20 people are allowed to socially distance at a protest. 

Despite students all wearing masks, using hand sanitiser, and socially distancing in groups smaller than 20, police did not allow the rally to even start. 

That small, socially distanced and responsible rallies are the subject of repression is extremely worrying, particularly considering the current situation where non-essential business and recreation is being reopened.


Our protest was far safer than the average bus or supermarket. The actions of NSW police were clearly politically motivated and should be opposed.

This fundraiser is being organised by one of the Education officers of the USyd SRC, on behalf of the activists fined at the event. 

Any extra money raised will be used for legal costs, or diverted to the SRC for future protests. 

Funding update as of the 15th of September  - the fundraiser money will be collected by one of the individuals fined at the protest - Seth Dias, who is in contact with the others fined and will distribute the necessary money to each person (and the excess to the USyd SRC, which he is affiliated with)
