Student Short Film "OVERTHINK" by Savannah Toney

Hi friends, family and supporters, my name is Savannah Toney, and I am a junior film production major at the University of Southern California. I am currently raising funds for my first short-film project as a writer/director: OVERTHINK. This is the major film project of my junior year for CTPR 310, a class which is equivalent to a "clinical/apprentice" experience where we rotate roles as producer, writer/director, and director of photographer.
OVERTHINK is the story of a creative, thoughtful, and hard-working young black woman navigating an uncomfortable workspace. As she navigates petty conflict and sheisty co-workers, she learns to stand up for herself and demand what's hers. OVERTHINK draws upon the experiences of early-career young professionals as they navigate and re-shape the spaces they occupy.
I am blessed to have the good fortune of having various professional and personal role models and parents who have taught me to believe in myself and my worth. Yet, we still are forced to witness and encounter everyday occurrences where even our best is challenged, questioned, diminished, and mischaracterized. OVERTHINK highlights the mental, psychological, and spiritual journey we undertake as we seek to maintain and expand our sense of self while transforming unwelcome people, places, and spaces. Whether we are a candidate for the Supreme Court, a medical resident or a creative (writer, photographer, film maker, etc.), OVERTHINK portrays a story that is relatable, uncomfortable, and yet hopeful.
With your financial support, I will use the funds to cover the cost of production: rental space, actors, equipment (beyond what's provided free by the University), transportation, craft services (have to feed the crew for at least four shooting days) and festival fees.
I'm launching this GoFundMe on Oscar Night to symbolize the ways in which inclusivity elevates the film industry! Will Packer, iconic filmmaker, is producing this year's Oscars, and his very presence in this role is transformative. Samuel Jackson will receive a long-overdue recognition for his iconic career. And three women will serve as Oscar hosts, two of them women of color. I will continue the work of elevating and transforming the film industry - starting with this short film - with your support. For all the ways you support me, including your support for this project, I am deeply appreciative and hope you will stay for the entire ride! Thank you for your support!
Gratefully,
Savannah
