Student LunchTime Legal Action Fund
Public Elementary school students of Bellevue School District in Washington State normally only have 20 minutes lunch time. After standing in line for food, a lot of kids only get a few minutes to take a few bites before the lunch break is declared over. Then the students are sent to the playground for recess.
Zhifang Yang-Denor, a Bellevue parent of two elementary school kids, and a registered dietitian, entered an 18-month-long quest to extend lunch times at all of Bellevue’s public elementary schools. Despite her and other parents' continuous effort to work with the school district, the school kids today still do not get adequate time to eat lunch. Thousands of children was left hungry and undernourished every day at school.
A group of parents under the lead of Zhifang Yang-Denor are starting legal action against the school district, fighting for adequate lunch time for all of our elementary school students. KOMO News, Seattle Times and KIRO 7 already reported this effort with more details (please follow the links) and will continue to monitor the progress. Ms. Yang-Denor is also taking the lead to make a change for the entire state. By targeting the root of the problem at the state level, a winning outcome will ensure positive changes for all school district in WA.
