Student Looking To Go Pro But I Don't Have Right Instrument

I’m thrilled to launch this GoFundMe campaign to raise money for a professional double bass! Music has been my greatest passion since I started playing bass at age 10. Growing up, my family couldn’t afford lessons or a professional instrument, but thanks to the incredible support of my public school teachers, I worked hard and earned a full-ride scholarship to college. Now, at 24, I’m about to graduate with a Master of Music degree from the Shepherd School of Music, one of the top music schools in the world.

In addition to my studies, I’ve been honored to give back to the Houston community as a fellow with the Houston Symphony’s Community-Embedded Musicians department and the DACAMERA Young Artist Program. I also perform with the KINETIC Ensemble and am a section member of the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra. Whether teaching violin to elementary students, mentoring high school musicians, performing interactive concerts at dementia centers, or playing onstage, I strive to share my love of music with as many people as possible.

Three years ago, I raised money for my current bass, believing my career would focus on freelance work and regional orchestras. But during grad school, I realized I have what it takes to achieve my dream of performing with a full-time professional orchestra! To do that, I need an instrument capable of competing at the highest level. While my current bass has served me well, I’ve now outgrown its sound and volume limitations.

That’s why I’m excited to work with award-winning luthier Aaron Reiley to build a bass like those played by professionals in major orchestras. Aaron’s basses are used by musicians such as Joe Conyers, principal bass of the Philadelphia Orchestra, and I’m thrilled to collaborate with him again.

I am grateful for every step of my journey and am determined to achieve my dream of playing in a full-time symphony orchestra. As one of the few African-American musicians pursuing this path, I want to increase representation and inspire others to follow their dreams. I’ve always said I aspire to be the bassist I wished I’d seen growing up—someone who looks like me and takes pride in their roots. I hope to motivate the next generation of musicians to do the same!
