Student Delegation to Puerto Rico: US Colonialism
Donation protected
A group of eight high school youth from San Diego are organizing a week-long trip to Puerto Rico in June of 2019 to study U.S. colonialism and build solidarity with the Puerto Rican community.
This delegation was born out of our students’ desires to engage in transformative experiences abroad as working class students of color who often don't have the resources to travel or participate in traditional school trips.
In this delegation, we are hoping to shed light on an often-ignored part of this nation: the long-term effects of U.S. colonialism, particularly in Puerto Rico. Students will also witness the devastating after-effects of Hurricane María and evaluate the response of the U.S. government.
Activism and resistance to colonialism will be a focus of this delegation. Students will meet with community leaders, high school and university students, artists, and environmental activists to learn about the diverse ways people have resisted over the years. They will also participate in solidarity efforts with local organizations to help with the work that is still needed almost a year and a half after Hurricane María. Upon returning for their trip, students will engage in report backs and share their experiences with the community. They also hope to develop leadership skills among themselves and other younger students at their school so that these types of experiences can continue.
We need your help to make this possible for our students! We are certain that it is these types of experiences that truly change the lives of students and inspire them to fight for equity social justice and in their communities. While we are planning regular fundraising events in the upcoming months and applying for grants, we are looking towards our community for help. Please reach out if you have any questions or if you would like to support in another way! Gracias.
