Stuart Appel Memorial Lecture
Donation protected
In 2012, a heart attack took the life of my friend, colleague and classmate, Stuart Appel, at the age of 58 when he was biking in Maryland. What a loss.
Stuart was a well-loved father, husband, brother, uncle and son and a much-admired and respected man in both his personal and professional circles. He was president of his award winning firm, Wells Appel, in Philadelphia, and a passionate contributor to the communities around him. He was honored as a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects in 2009 for "his commitment to teaching and mentoring" and "a body of work that reflects a profound understanding of context, culture, and natural systems."
On top of all of his professional talents, Stuart had a unique ability to cultivate rich relationships with his family, friends, colleagues and clients. At his memorial service, his youngest child, Sarah, commented that her dad had a mirror and in it he only saw the good things about us. Those words were so true and I'm certain that ability was key to his many successes.
The Landscape Architecture program at our alma mater, the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse, wishes to honor Stuart's immense contribution to the profession with an endowed lecture in his name. Many of our classmates and teachers have already donated $10,000 toward the $25,000 needed to insure the endowment.
I have volunteered to extend the appeal out to Stuart's family, friends, co-workers and colleagues so that we can bring the lecture to reality.
Please join me by making a contribution to the Stuart Appel Memorial Fund here at GoFundMe. May I also ask you to kindly consider sharing this opportunity with others in your circle who would like to honor Stuart's life in this way.
Thank you for your support.
Kind regards,
Kate Martin
