Struggling Mom and her Son

Hello Friends and Family,

Thank you for taking the time to consider this go fund me story.

As most of you know I have worked in the health and education systems for many, many years.  I have encountered many patients and students over the last 30 years that are in desperate need and, for the most part, these systems work for them.

Recently, however, I have been working with a 15 year old boy, who I see slipping through the cracks.  He is a student of mine at James Lick High school in East San Jose.   When he was 13,  this young man's father walked out on him and his mother and they have struggled ever since to make ends meet.  Once, a thriving, well adjusted young teen with friends and regular involvement with his school, he now has become depressed,  filled with anxiety and is increasingly absent during the week.  We as a public school team are trying to help him by providing him counseling services, support in his classes and free meals while at school, but he and his mother need more to help them get relief from this debilitating downward cycle.

I had the pleasure of meeting his mom and she is struggling to find work and recently was fired from her job after being told she had too many court dates to attend because of her divorce.  They are living in a two bedroom apartment with an elderly couple.  They share a room and have little money for food and clothes.

For some reason I have been overwhelmed and compelled with the need to serve this young man, Angel, and his mother, Maria, in a capacity that is more than I can offer during my regular work day and beyond that which the public school team's efforts can offer.   As such, I have reached out to Catholic Charities for their support and am working thru other acquaintances to try to help both of them get work.

After talking this over with my husband, Scott, I thought it would be a good idea to start a go fund me page to help this family with basic daily living needs.  They are two months behind on rent and both Scott and I have helped with rent for the month of January, but more is needed.

I am hoping, through our circle of friends and family, with all our faith and blessings, we can help this family.    We are looking to raise  $6,000  to cover their rent and food for the next 6 months (rent is $800 and a food estimate is $400 per month) and give them some breathing room to re-establish a foundation for themselves.   If we can make it longer than 6 months that would be awesome.

Please join me in this cause.  They are a wonderful, sweet family in desperate need and, for many of us who will see this, are literally and figuratively, in our own back yard.  They are our  'neighbors' on the other side of the fence, who we don't know personally, but our upbringing tells us, they could use a hand up.....not a hand out.

Thanks to all of you for your time and consideration.

P.S.  so many of you have asked...the meaning behind the picture I selected - this is a picture of me and my siblings and it reminds  me of how fortunate I have been in my life both as a child and an adult
