Elizabeth (Lizzy) Erlinda Verdugo (Dermody)...
Funny story: On April 18, 2002, Lizzy was born. I was nine at the time, and when my mom first told me about my new baby cousin "Elizabeth Erlinda", my first reaction was, "well which name are they going to choose...Elizabeth? ...or Linda?"
Since learning that my little cousin's name is in fact Elizabeth, not Linda, I've learned a lot about Lizzy:
-I've learned that Lizzy is incredibly smart: she and I are almost 10 years apart and I think we've read at the same reading level for most of our lives.
-I've learned that Lizzy is inspiringly organized: seriously, I've never seen a 14 year-old so put together!
-I've learned that Lizzy is an awesome performer: I've seen her in a number of shows now and that big smile on stage never fails to put a smile on my face
-I've learned that Lizzy is one of the most caring humans in the world: whether she's caring for a family member, caring about a homework assignment, or caring about what you have to say, Lizzy takes care of everything and everyone.
A few months ago we learned something about Lizzy that was not so exciting: Lizzy has a tumor on her pituitary gland. Soon after, we learned that Lizzy was going to have brain surgery. Next, we learned that Lizzy's tumor was malignant. But through each new thing we learned about the not-so-friendly guest inhabiting one beautiful and talented brain, Lizzy remained the smart, caring, on top of it, beautiful young woman she always is. (At times I think she was even giving the medical staff ideas of how best to proceed with her own care!) And we learned yet another thing about Lizzy: she is incredibly strong.
We know that Lizzy's strength is enough to conquer the scary and difficult to-do list ahead: 3 more rounds of chemo and 5 weeks of radiation. (All just before she starts her first year of high school!) And we know that your support can help Lizzy remain strong and decrease some of the financial burden on Lizzy's family over the next few months.
How your donations (big and small!) might help:
--$5.00 could cover the gas it takes to get from Lizzy's house in Plymouth to Children's Hospital of Detroit where she is receiving treatment... A trip Lizzy will have to make many a time in the next few months
--$20.00 could buy Lizzy a "chemo kerchief" or a fun hat to wear
--$25.00 could offset the cost of one of the many prescriptions and out-of-pocket medical costs that Lizzy will incur over the next few months
--$50.00 could offset the financial burden of the time Lizzy's mom, Bridget, will have to take off work while supporting Lizzy and her 2 other daughters, Izzy and Jordan
We so appreciate any donations you are able to offer, and definitely all of the well wishes and good thoughts you can send Lizzy's way during this time. Thank you for being #LizzyStrong! Let's conquer Lizzy's cancer!
