Everything changed in an instant.
During his last race of the night, Kashton was involved in a horrific snocross accident when another snowmobile landed directly on top of him. He went unconscious for approximately 30 seconds before responders were able to revive him. He was carried off the track on a stretcher and rushed by ambulance to Mercy Hospital.
Once stabilized, an ultrasound revealed internal bleeding. He was immediately transferred to Hennepin County Medical Center — the area’s top trauma hospital — where doctors discovered bleeding around his heart from one of the main arteries. He was rushed into the operating room, where an extraordinary team of medical professionals worked tirelessly.
Kashton underwent emergency open-heart surgery to stop the bleeding. He remained stable through the procedure, and doctors successfully repaired the source. He later underwent a second surgery after doctors found additional fluid in his abdomen. While there were no severe organ tears, his small intestine was severely bruised, causing blockage. Surgeons placed a feeding tube past the injured area, and his heart will continue to be closely monitored to ensure it is functioning properly.
He later transferred to University of MN Masonic Children’s hospital with the potential of another open heart surgery. After consideration, the doctors decided that Kashton needed to heal and get stronger prior to having his second open heart surgery. Refer to his caring bridge link below to follow along with Kashton’s progress as he continues to fight.
If you know Kashton, you know that racing snowmobiles isn’t just a sport to him — it’s his passion. Snocross is where he feels most alive. His determination, grit, and fun-loving personality shine both on and off the track. Even in the hospital, he has managed to keep his humor and strength, impressing the very doctors caring for him.
His incredible snocross family stands behind him, along with extended family and friends.
As his mom said, “25K will return with a few more battle wounds and a whole lot tougher next season.”
This journey is far from over. The funds raised will help support:
• Mounting medical bills from multiple emergency surgeries and intensive care
• Kashton’s ongoing recovery and rehabilitation
• Travel, time away from work, and expenses for his family during this critical time
• Rebuilding Nelson Race Team — better and stronger — when Kashton is ready to return to the sport he loves
Every donation, share, and prayer makes a difference. Thank you for surrounding Kashton and his family with strength, love, and hope during this fight.
Please continue to keep him in your thoughts as he rests and begins the long road to recovery.
