StrikeOut ALS

Donation protected
Thank you in advance for viewing.  Though this page is to monetary support Hector Capristo’s fight to STRIKEOUT ALS, we ask that you keep him in your prayers also.

Hector Capristo is a son, father, husband, brother, believer in the Lord, Army veteran, baseball coach, friend, Dodgers fan, and a role model.

I met Hector five years ago at Whittier Pony baseball when I managed his son’s first baseball team.  Hector immediately requested to help the team. Both son and dad were shy and quiet at first.  It took Nate most of the season to breakout of his shell.  However Hector was coaching in full force after one practice.  Nate and Hector were the first one at practice and the last to leave.  I could immediately see the love he has for his son.  Nate is now 8 years old.  Nate is in the second grade and loves playing on his travel baseball team (MVP Hustle).  Hector and Sonya additionally have a talkative and joyous 4 year old daughter, Alyna.

Though most have heard of ALS, and some know the prognosis, no one can understand it happening to their loved one.

ALS is defined by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke as:
a group of rare neurological diseases that mainly involve the nerve cells (neurons) responsible for controlling voluntary muscle movement. Voluntary muscles produce movements like chewing, walking, and talking. The disease is progressive, meaning the symptoms get worse over time. Currently, there is no cure for ALS and no effective treatment to halt, or reverse, the progression of the disease.

Additionally according to the ALS Association, people who have served in the military “are approximately twice as likely to develop ALS as those who have not served”.  Hector proudly served in the Army.

Hector started to experience symptoms in the summer of 2019 during Nate’s baseball teams’ World Series.  Hector continued to coach and work.  As his symptoms progressed, Hector stopped working.   Hector was diagnosed in November of the same year just before his 40th birthday.  According to his physicians, Hector symptoms are progressing quickly.  We are currently working on getting Hector stem cell injections. Stem cell injections have shown promise in clinical trials in slowing disease progression.
This will just be the start in Hector’s fight to #StrikeOutALS.  A recent case study of ALS concluded that the out-of-pocket expense of ALS is more than $100,000. We have set our goal accordingly. All donations will be used to support Hector and his family.

Additionally Hector struggles more each week to get up to his upstairs apartment.  Any help in referrals related to this in the city of Whittier is greatly appreciated.  We can be contacted through this page.

Again, please keep Hector, Sonya, Nathanyal, and Alyna in your prayers.
