Strength is the only option: Caleb and his family

I’m a driver for Wave Taxi here in Keswick. My wife and I are new residents to Georgina. I started driving for this company shortly after we moved here. This is where I came to meet Caleb, his mom and little sister. This truly became more than a job when you get to meet and know such amazing people. But this little man really made me appreciate what it is to never take the small things for granted.
I first met this beautiful family while taking them to run errands in town. Mom would go in and I was more than happy to be with these awesome kids. I love kids, I love helping people whenever I can and I love making people smile. But in this moment it was the exact opposite, as it was young Caleb who was making me smile, laugh and at such a young age, showed me something that most grown men who step into my taxi don’t do. He had asked me to start doing laps around the parking lot as it would comfort his little sister to do so. I threw it on drive and we started chatting. This little man was so outgoing with me and so dedicated to his mom and little sister. Mom came out I dropped them off. It was truly the best part of my day. Then later on I heard some back story on this loving family that shook me to my core.
Caleb’s birth mother has personal issues and so it was Caleb, dad, the amazing woman he calls mommy and little sister. Caleb had battled Leukemia and at such a young age went through the treatments and meds and fought like hell, they all did. Caleb got to ring the bell. His little sister was born, but she was premature and had heart issues. She was in care for a time on oxygen. When she got off oxygen, it was that same heart issue that took dad as he passed during that just last year. It has been a consistent uphill battle for mom to now have to support these kids on her own. This family now is trying to hold it together, not being able to have proper time to grieve and mourn as it’s been pure survival. Especially for Caleb as he also had to deal with bullies at school.
My wife and I were so tremendously touched by the strength and courage of this family that we wanted to do something nice for them. We decided we would ask mom if it were okay that we take them all to Wonderland for a day on us, no matter what the cost or what they wanted. We were excited to have them in the taxi again so I could propose this to mom. Today was the day I got the call, but it was actually o call I didn’t want to get. I was picking them up to head to the cancer centre at Southlake. Caleb hasn’t been well for weeks and he had to go. It was shortly after I got the call to pick up mom and sister to take them downtown as Caleb was being taken by ambulance to Sick Kids. On the ride down was really without speech. I was so emotional and was getting choked up, but I didn’t want mom to see or hear it as what I was feeling was absolutely nothing compared to what she was feeling.
This family has and is still going through so much. Their strength, fortitude, optimism and rock solid love is so immensely inspiring beyond words. I am here now, humbly asking anyone who is reading this to please help me support this family financially with whatever we can. What they are going through is enough to break anyone, but they are there fighting and surviving because that’s the only option they have. Please help me and kindly give anything, no matter how small, so this family doesn’t have the added stress of getting by with rent, food and bills.
Please send up your prayers for them, and please help make a difference.
God bless
