A Family’s Journey Through Dementia

There are some stories that never make it into the spotlight, stories where people silently endure immense challenges behind closed doors. One such story is the journey my family has been navigating for the past decade—a journey defined by love, sacrifice, and a relentless pursuit of dignity.
As many of you know, I’ve always been a private person, especially when it comes to my family. For years, I’ve kept the struggles of our day-to-day lives in the shadows, not wanting to burden anyone else with our pain. But after a decade of silently walking this difficult path, I have made the decision to take a chance and open up. I’ve realized that I can’t do it all alone.
My mother has been living with early-onset dementia since 2014. Ten years—ten years of heartache, confusion, and love. My dad and I have been her caregivers, silently fighting a battle we never imagined we’d have to face. Through countless nights spent in the ICU, hours advocating for her care in rehab facilities, and the constant struggle to find a better home for her, we’ve done our best to navigate this overwhelming journey.
But no matter how strong we are, there are moments when even the strongest need help.
For over a decade, my dad has shouldered the immense responsibility of caring for my mom. With his quiet strength, he has been by her side every day, doing whatever it takes to make her comfortable and safe. And while I try my best to support him, with two small children and bills of my own, there’s only so much I can do. That’s why I’ve decided to share this with you.
My mom has always been the kind of person who would drop everything to help others. She saw someone in need and found a way to lift them up. She’s helped countless women, ensuring they had the support they needed to raise their children, adjust to life in a new country, and balance the demands of being a working mom and student. She was a rehabilitation counselor for the state of Texas, always advocating for those who needed it most. She gave of herself tirelessly, often without expecting anything in return.
And now, both of my parents are in need of help. They need a village, a support system, beyond just me and our immediate family.
The goal of this GoFundMe is to alleviate some of the financial burdens we are facing. Specifically, the costs associated with my mom’s continence care—care that insurance doesn’t cover. After exhausting every option to apply for programs that could support my dad in his role as her caregiver, I’m still left feeling helpless. The costs of basic care supplies are mounting, and I feel like I’m reaching the limit of what I can do.
But this isn’t just a story about finances—it’s about love. It’s about my parents, who have always given from their hearts, now finding themselves in a position where they need help. It’s about the unspoken strength of a family doing everything they can to keep their loved one’s dignity intact.
If you’re able, I humbly ask for your support. Any contribution, no matter how small, would ease the strain we’re under. It would bring us one step closer to providing the care my mom deserves, and to giving my dad some much-needed relief from the weight of this journey.
As a family, we’ve always believed in giving back, in lifting up those around us. And now, we find ourselves in a place where we need that same kindness and support. Thank you for taking the time to read our story, and for being part of this village, this community, that I never realized we needed until now.
Together, we can make a difference.
