Strength and Support for Derik’s Recovery

My name is Sarah, and I’m starting this GoFundMe for my brother-in-law and sister.

In early December, my brother in law was attacked by two dogs. Logic cannot explain how he survived; doctors that worked tirelessly to save him the night it happened told my sister they don’t know how he survived. He is….simply…an absolute miracle.

As a family, we are beyond grateful to the bystanders who called for help, the first responders, the trauma team, surgeons…any and everyone that we can credit for saving his life.

After multiple surgeries and weeks in the ICU, he is making great strides in recovering. He remains in the hospital, with my sister Emmalee by his side every step of the way to be his eyes while he continues to heal from his numerous injuries. His and her families continue to support and surround them both in love.

The biggest need they have is prayer/thoughts/positive vibes. Most specifically for restoration of his vision. For healing of his muscles that’ll allow him to be able to eat/drink again. And for complete healing altogether - body, mind, soul, spirit.

To speak of how special a person my brother in law, Derik, is - he is a veteran, having served in the Navy. He is such a kind, caring, intelligent, hard working, compassionate, thoughtful, and loving person. All of which have only been magnified and multiplied in this incredibly hard time.

We are beyond proud of my brother in law beating the odds numerous times already, and continuing to surprise medical professionals with the abilities of the human body to heal. And the resilience of the human spirit. Much lies ahead in the road to his recovery, but he has shown he is a true warrior, and a precious miracle.

It is unknown when he’ll be able to return to work, what that will look like, etc. And with my sister being his eyes/by his side every minute of the day - she hasn’t been able to return to work yet. In the uncertainty of what lies ahead with his recovery period, another need they have is with financials. There will, no doubt, be more doctor’s visits/possible surgeries/procedures/other expenses related and unrelated to the accident. These two are some of the most selfless, caring, and humble people I have ever known - I am asking for help for them as he continues to recover, and as they begin adapting to a new normal ahead.

Any little bit helps,
Thank you
