Bulgaria faces a growing street dog population crisis with large numbers of dogs abandoned and thousands of puppies born on the streets each year. Our devoted and compassionate team at Street Hearts BG, led by Emma and Anthony Smith, works tirelessly to transform the lives of the dogs that would otherwise have no chance of survival. Since 2018, the Street Hearts BG team have successfully rehomed almost 1,500 dogs, ensuring they have a chance to thrive in loving homes. Yet a vast number of unwanted dogs in Bulgaria face appalling cruelty and neglect, with many dogs living their lives on a short chain with limited access to shelter, food and water.
Through our outreach work we provide support and advice to local dog owners to encourage better care for their dogs. We also work closely with schools in the region providing education sessions at the shelter so that the next generation learn about the importance of good animal welfare.
We are already making progress but it is vital that we continue our work to help end suffering through our successful programme of rehabilitation, neutering and education.
To ensure that we can help many more dogs in need, we want to take Street Hearts BG on the next stage of its journey. To do this we need to become a UK registered charity. We will need expert legal support to help us achieve this and it’s a costly process - the fees alone will come to around £9000.
Becoming a registered UK charity is so important for our future. Without this status, we are missing out on Gift Aid, grants and other funding opportunities that would enable us to rehabilitate and rehome more dogs and ensure we can provide ongoing support for all of our adopters from our growing UK based team. We are committed to giving the best care to our dogs in Bulgaria but we must also support our dogs in the UK and their adopters. We also need to be able to financially support any dogs that are relinquished back into our care so that they can be rehomed responsibly.
It’s a big ask! To help us achieve our dream for the dogs we all care about so much; we need your support.
