Street Art Campaign on shipbreaking - Lisbon 2023

Donation protected
The NGO Shipbreaking Platform needs your help to fund an impactful street art campaign on the walls of the historical city centre of Lisbon (Portugal)!

Do you know where old ships go to die?
Most of the commercial ships, full of toxic substances, are simply broken down - by hand - on the beaches of India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. There, unscrupulous shipping companies exploit minimal enforcement of environmental and safety rules to maximise profits. Since 2009, around 7000 ships were beached in South Asia, causing the death of over 400 young workers. As an NGO, we are advocating for stricter regulations: we want ship recycling to be safe, clean and in line with material recovery and circular economy!

Who are we?
The NGO Shipbreaking Platform is a global coalition of organisations working to reverse the environmental harm and human rights abuses caused by current shipbreaking practices and to ensure the safe and environmentally sound dismantling of end-of-life ships worldwide.

Why do we need your help?
The street art campaign is part of a series of cultural initiatives that we are planning in the city of Lisbon in May and June 2023 to raise awareness of the human and environmental costs of shipbreaking. Several photos, taken by award-winning artist Tomaso Clavarino during his trip to South Asia, will be pasted on selected walls of the historical centre of the city. A map indicating all the posters' locations will be available at tourist info points and online for easy access.

The powerful images, coupled with informative texts, not only will show how the huge metal skeletons of old vessels are dangerously stripped apart on the shores of the Global South but also will open a window into the lives of the exploited workers and vulnerable local communities, denouncing the illegality of this toxic trade.

Being a small NGO, your support matters to us! Your contribution will cover the printing of the pictures, the staff in charge of licensing and installation, and all the campaign communication activities.

Stay tuned and follow our social media channels: pictures and videos of the street art campaign will be published there! We hope to see you soon in Lisbon! Thank you in advance for your contributions!
